Selected Erotic Poems

Charles Baudelaire

Translated into modern English by R J Dent

Charles Baudelaire’s erotic poems caused a scandal on their publication in 1857.

The author and the publisher were prosecuted for publishing poems that were ‘an insult to public decency’ and six of the poems from that collection were suppressed.

Those poems (which were banned in France until 1949) are in this collection. They are: ‘Lesbos’; ‘Condemned Women: Delphine and Hippolyta’; ‘Lethe’; ‘To One Who Is Too Happy’; ‘Jewels’; and ‘The Metamorphosis of the Vampire’.

As the title Selected Erotic Poems makes clear, all of the poems in this collection deal with themes relating to sex, decadence and the erotic.
